I am new to photography and recently returned from a trip to Costa Rica where I practiced a lot of my newly learned knowledge. I went through my photos and here is one that I thought was one of the better shots.

I was curious to see what others think? Is this a good photo or just an amateur shot? I used a Nikon D60. I can take the criticism so lets hear it. :D

    Thanks.

Me either! Clerendon is definitely looking busy, so *hopefully* Reston will be alright. I've tried calling the store all day and cannot seem to get a response out of them on anything, much less when they'll let people line up, how many they'll have, etc.. =/
Probably going to try and be there around 4 or 5.

My guess is around $100, so it may be worth waiting for a little while. At this point, I personally won't be upgrading for a while, as I'm not a huge fan of what I have seen so far out of Lion.

That's what I thought, if waiting a week or two can save me a couple of bucks, then its worth the wait.

I just recently downloaded Wiretap and also record live streaming radio from iTunes.

The only way I could get these streams to cd was to re-assign audio prefs in Wiretap, to the .aif Quicktime setting and have the file saved on the desktop. Then re-import those AIFF files to iTunes, then burn.

Of course if you have Toast you can avoid using iTunes to burn the disc entirely.
I hope you get it working...

So my school's robotics team was rummaging through a closet of stuff that was to be thrown out, and we found an Apple IIe.

    I have a couple questions:

The operating system is in the ROM, right? No need for a floppy OS or something?

Does the computer need a mouse? In my reading, it seems like it doesn't.

It only had two cards inside: the 5.25 floppy card and what I think was the RAM. Does it need anything else to operate (i.e. a video card)?

Lastly, are there any things I didn't think of that I should know??
Any sweet games for it on eBay?

    Thanks!:D:D

No, the Operating System is *not* in ROM. The ROM includes BASIC, and the System Monitor (kind of like BIOS, but with a few extra bells & whistles).

The Operating System comes on 5.25" floppy disks. The Apple IIe usually ran DOS 3.3 or ProDos as the Operating System. Disk images for these Operating Systems can be found at various places on the net, but you'll need a physical 5.25" floppy to boot from in order to read/write to floppy drives. As a general rule, many users formatted their Apple II floppies to include a copy of DOS or ProDos on each floppy. This was done as a convenience to keep from having to look around for a Master DOS disk every time you rebooted ("Now *where* did I put that damn floppy!??").

If you boot the Apple IIe without a floppy, you will get a Basic prompt, and can access the low-level monitor routines if you know how. But you will not be able to do too much with the machine unless you boot DOS or ProDOS.

The Apple II does not need a mouse.

Umm. I think a new iPod Shuffle goes for 129. I don't know if many people will want to pay $9 less for a used one. Hey but I don't have one! Don't listen to me.

EDIT: Oh shippings free. GREAT DEAL!

BTW... Add tax, for whereever most people are and you are most likely paying about $137-$138. I am doing a new one for $120 shipped.

keith is probably right re: dv import, i don't use imovie so i don't know (thus the version history link). There shouldn't be any qualitative difference btwn DV files imported on older / newer machines and the import from tape is in real-time, so an old machine will crank away just as well as anything. The new machine will make a big difference when actually transcoding, editing, and exporting.

While the 3D thing might not interest you, the 3DS is much more powerful than the current DSi, meaning much better graphic capabilities. So if you ever want to play anything other than Pokemon Black in the next couple of years you should wait for the 3DS.

If you're not really interested in gaming on the DS or doing anything other than Pokemon Black go ahead and save some money buying the DSi.

Not only that but you can filly adjust the 3D effect to your liking (including completely off) but again, I wouldn't knock it till you try it. I'm pretty sure Mario kart and ocarina of time 3D are going to be epic beyond people's predictions.

I'll be at the Palo Alto Store by about 2PM with my copy from a nearby college bookstore that I'm getting for $69 before 2PM. That should put me near the front of the queue.
I don't know what you mean here. You're going to the Apple store with a copy of Leopard you already bought? Or do you mean you'll be near the front of the queue of people who will have the item in hand?

Pretty sure you have to buy a $129 copy to get the T-Shirt.
Well it does say on Apple's website that the "first 500 guests" will receive the T-shirt, and says nothing about requiring a purchase. Though, if MacMall doesn't ship it out on Thursday, I'll be cancelling the order with them and going to the store to buy it anyway. And if they do, I would still consider going to the store, and buying it and returning it just for the T-shirt. I'm a geek like that. ;)

Oh, you edited your post to answer mine, so I shall do the same ;)

I don't however believe I have broken the rules but if you feel otherwise I hope my apology puts a smile on your face and makes your day just that bit better! ;)

Duff-Man says....not to flog a somewhat dead horse, but you have indeed broken the rules - both the forums and Apple's.

Even *if* your friend paid for it, it's not his to give you to install and use without violating Apple's license agreement, and as for the forum rules, as quoted above it's *very* clear that you've asked for help with software you do not have license to use so yes, you've broken the rules.....oh yeah!

i myself had this problem once in the past, i fixed it by using a small amount of superglue on the edges of the processor, just enough so it sticks firmly in place but not too much that it blocks the thermal paste between the heatsink and processor

will that fix the issue message that I keep getting? When I boot to the desktop it always says " restart" with a error message that looks like a shutdown button..

Pretty nice start Royce. The whole learning to film and video edit is about trying something out, look at it with a critical eye and the fix what can be better... And with your age, and effort, you could probably become really good. You seem to have a basic idea of what you want to do.

Now to the constructive critisism :)

I think looking at these videos, my next move would be to try and stabilize the shots even more. Make your pans really smoothe... do this by panning 1-2 secs more than you want in each end of the shot and then edit that part out. It's often the beginning and the end where some stuttering occurs, especially if you don't have a video head for the stand.

"Less is more"... a popular phrase that still holds merit. In this case try to give more variation to your zoom shots. I think I noticed 3 zooms in a row... that might be too much for some. Also do test runs with these zooms so it's nice and tight and you don't have to adjust angle during the zoom.

You know, one thing I absolutely love is sideways dolly shots. This can ofcourse be a bit hard without an actual dolly, but you can achieve something similar with a homemade stabilizer (the t-section one with metal piping works pretty good...). Then do the finishing touches in something like AE or anything else that can track movement.

I don't want to sound like you did a poor job, because you didn't. I wish more guys like you would spend time learning how to do this job.
So get out there, and like you said, you can make movies about anything... don't let anyone tell you you can't do this or that. Your imagination will decide what's right!

    :)

Edit: realised I didn't see your mud race vid. I actually think that was nicely done, apart from the excessive contrast ;) (a matter of taste, some like it some don't... let the client decide.) Your zooms worked fine and the freehand motion came more to its right here than on the beach.
I might sound old fasioned, but I like when the camera movement fits the atmosphere of the scene... therefore a more tranquil movement might have suited the beach shots better. Where the raw action environment of the huge trucks work excellent with hard zooms and a little motion in the pans.

I would have took my tripod down to the beach, but being 15 my only transportation is an Arbor Longboard. Thanks a lot for your advice, I will consider it. Thanks again.

I think that legreve gave you some really solid advice. You editing is really good, way better than mine was when I was 15. Just concentrate on slowing down your zooms/pans and keeping the camera steady when you have to film.

I've been interested in video editing since I was 12 or 13. It just now took off for me, got a new a camera, MacBook Pro, and some legit software. Thanks for you're post.

Who at age 15 gets asked to shoot video of hot chicks? Well done.

I'm a total amateur and much older, but the advice above about the smoothness of the pans seems spot on. Watching the hot chicks video (the only one I watched) there was just so much motion it was almost dizzying.

I actually wasn't videoing at the photo shoot, I was taking pictures. I did edit the video though. I will admit it was a pretty lucky job. Here are the photo shoot pictures: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=350121&id=414748618065

What we really need is a Windows Keynote player downloadable for free off of Apple's website. ...Apple could probably throw one together in a day and iWork sales would skyrocket (not to mention the switching potential of the Windows users watching such a beautiful presentation on their piece of crap :D).

yep. that would sell iWork to me. dam uni being MS based.

    Hi folks,

I'm hoping someone could help me here.

I have a fantastic photograph from a client's Grandparents wedding - from 1918! How cool is that!? It's in remarkable condition and I've edited the blemishes etc.. and now i'm working on blending in the left side as it's burned white at the edge.

I've used some levels layers (multiple and screens), but I can't seem to get rid of that white flaring :(

I'm followed page 92 of Katrina Eismann's book b/c I ran out of options, but I can't seem to fix this one.

I realize the right side of the photo is dark and I was going to play with that, but any suggestions for that left side?

    Using Photoshop CS5.

Of course, this is the last photo I need to fix for her project.

    Thanks,
    Keebler

Was there a reason you have one of the Few Razer Mice that is not suported for Mac? Mamba, Naga, Imperator, Orochi, DeathAdder, Spectre. All are Mac compatable.
Razer Naga Spec ( the one I use)
5600DPI Razer Precision 3.5G Laser Sensor
    17 fully programmable MMO-optimized buttons
Maximum comfort for long gaming sessions
Custom interface AddOns for MMO games
    PC/Mac compatible

    From engadget.com
"Razer already provides full Mac support for a few of its gaming peripherals -- including the Naga and DeathAdder -- and basic support for others, but it's now taken avantage of GDC to "reaffirm" its commitment to Mac users. That apparently means that "all upcoming" Razer products -- including the company's line of StarCraft II peripherals -- will boast full Mac support out of the box, and that the company will be rolling out updates to some of its existing products "later this year," including the Orochi, Mamba, and Imperator gaming mice. First Steam, now Razer peripherals -- dare we say it's a good time to be a Mac gamer? "
