Was it really that long ago? Time flies, eh? Anyway.... They could have added it to the Mini back then quietly and without redesigning the whole case, similar to the way that the 5th USB port was added, if it was to satisfy photographers.
And they didn't need to immediately go to the top end SDXC.... most consumer cameras aren't using those cards yet. Once the low or middle speed SD card reader was added, it would have been easy to upgrade it to the top end SD card reader in a few years when those cards were more widely used. This would have been more in line of Apple's philosophy of increasing specs and features and keeping prices down. i.e. Today's new Mini has plain SD card reader, and in a year they "add" the faster reader to make a "new" new Mini.
I think there is something more to this... we'll just have to stay tuned, eh?

That article contains some errors. Shipping rates, for instance, are about the same as they were in 2008 and similar to 2002 so that is a red herring.
I would also question you as to why you think that China is an enemy? They appear to be more like a partner in a symbiotic relationship. You need each other.
Good points.
I think even though China is a legitimate partner, they are also a competitor and right now they seem to be doing better than the USA. Judging from their increased output, and also with quality going up on many items, if the public buys Chinese goods and keep on coming back, they deserve the business.
I don't see China as a military enemy like the other poster here does. China has far too much invested in the USA both in real estate/stocks, and in customers in the west to be stupid enough to pick a fight with us. Heck, China is slowly owning us so there's no fear of any military surprises there.
If anything, if the real cold war was about capitalism vs. communism, we are the winners since our capitalistic way of life has more than rubbed off on China and they stopped their isolationism and have to trade with the non-communist countries in order to survive. They have made their entire economy dependent on us as customers. The only pure communist country I can think of these days is North Korea and they are hanging on by a thread. So the conversion of China into what is in every way a capitalist nation is a trade I am willing to make if the cost is losing business here in the USA. I would hate to think if they were still run by Mao and viewed us as a military enemy. Also imagine what it would be like if they were dedicated communists like North Korea.

If you are correct the i5 processors are obviously going to be more expensive meaning they will have te same situation with the backlit keyboard
The i5 processors are the same price (or less) as the LV C2D they're using now. The SL9400 costs $284. The i5-2537 that's in the Samsung Series 9 costs $250.
The SL9600 costs $316. The comparable i7 LV SB processor costs $316.
Plus there's no 320m cost, so that component costs conceivably go down with a SB MBA making room to re-add the BL keyboard.
Speaking of:
It is the same with the backlit keyboard on the MBA, which was for years a standard feature. To take it away now in order to 'differentiate' it from the pro models, is total bull....!!
Although of course no-one but Apple knows the real reason - I maintain that the BL keyboard wasn't removed due to "luxury" or size, or battery life. I'm 99.99% sure it was to keep the cost down, to hit that $999 price-point and keep 30% margins.
Therefore, if a SB (or IB if Apple decides to leave it's new marquee portable completely stagnant for almost 2 years...) MBA saves on component costs via not being able to use the 320m - it could conceivably put the BL keyboard back in.
Besides:
Wanting a backlit keyboard isn't as unreasonable as you think it is... esp since the previous gen Air had it.
This. :)
Why does everybody repeat the mantra 'Ivy Bridge'? Will it make the Intel's HD 3000 perform better in some kind of mysterious magical way? Or do you expect that by the time IB is released Intel will have developed a new, presumably better, IGP? Shall we expect the same comments "Intel IGP sucks I'm gonna skip IB and wait for whatever-bridge" again next year?
Exactly. If I had loads of time on my hands, I know I could find loads of comments (probably from the same posters) last year saying "Ugh, Arrandale IGP sucks, I hope Apple waits till Sandy Bridge!"
There'll be just as many Intel IGP haters when Ivy Bridge is released, and only "matches" the 320m.
Get with it people - at some point we're gonna lose the 320m. If it's not with SB, then it'll be with IB and the graphics will still not get "better" than the 320m. It sucks - I agree - but it's inevitable.
Almost all people in this thread sound like they want to buy a Mac mini (MBA), but want at the same time the features of a Mac Pro (MBP). Silly.
Yeah, this is the MBA-forum, but it does not make this discussion thread better.
What are you talking about? We're all here 'cause we love the MBA. Would we all like a more powerful MBA? Of course - why not? Right now the MBP's rival the some late-model Mac Pro's. Why not desire more power in a portable (CPU, Graphics, or otherwise?).

yeah, it would only cost them $1000+ to have someone come round to my house and do something about it, well worth the 59 they would sell the end product for
do they check everybodys IP, how do they know i wasn't at wwdc.
Exactly - why would they bother? I'm not sharing it. Plus, I paid for Jaguar (well, the computer it came on), I paid for Panther, I paid for Tiger and I'll 100% certainly be paying for Leopard when it comes out. I want to play with the new features every so often, and get myself all excited about what's to come. How exactly am I hurting Apple? They'd be fools to drive away a long time and dedicated customer by throwing legal issues at me.

So how do you guys feel about me saying, that if can, I like to support Black owned businesses, because there aren't that many.
I have no problem with that.
I wonder why I often see signs like this in stores ...
It doesn't say "for any reason", because that may be contrary to local laws.
There can be many valid reasons for refusing service to some people.

Are you people seriously applauding this? What a waste of our tax dollars!! I do contracts with the Navy every single day and I know that the technology that they have will not be benefited by the use of iPad/iPod/iPhone. The military does not offer wi-fi to their staff on base. Everything is hard wired and the conduit is sealed with a tamper proof silicon. The Government is very very particular about their SIPRnet (as they call it). Without wi-fi, what use is the iPad for the military other than to give them a little treat and waste our tax dollars? They already have mobile equipment in the vehicles that is far superior to Apple's products.
Every officer I know has a gov't issued blackberry. The iphone and ipad don't necessarily need wifi to be of value.

I hoped that this update should have throw away the X1900 XT Bug with my 23" ACD while booting XP ... but no, still here ... grrr :/
I use the 30" ACD with mine and it works well...there IS a driver for the ACD you can install...called winacd located at sourceforge. Google winacd.
Not sure if that solves your problem, but I love the control it gives me on the ACD (like brightness controls, powerbutton behavior).
The only problem I have is that I get a weird color artifact on my screen, if I dumb down the resolution to 800x600 (can I say...OH MY GOD THATS BIG) it clears up, then up it to the proper resolution it is all good.

Sounds like a bunch of services your family doctor or gynecologist would be capable of performing.
As for sex education, again, NOT THE JOB OF THE GOVERNMENT.
I am sorry I don't agree with the government giving these services as free hand outs to people who don't have health insurance or can't foot the bill.
Sorry I am not a fan of paying for other people's social services.
Actually, I am not sorry.
If that's your ideology, you're selling yourself short by focusing just on Planned Parenthood. Don't forget about medicaid, social security, public education, and disability. In the name of not wanting to pay for other peoples' social services, might as well kill those too

I have been spending ours on this, searching and searching and searching to no avail. Basically, here's my problem. I use Better Touch Tool on my MBP for all of my trackpad gestures and it handles them quite well, except for one. I want to register a three-finger tap as CMD+SHIFT+CLICK or SHIFT+MIDDLE CLICK to open a link in a new tab and jump to that tab automatically in Chrome. The problem is that BTT only allows trackpad gestures to be predefined actions or keyboard shortcuts. The closest I've come so far has been setting three-finger tap to middle click and having to hold down shift, but I want the entire command to be key free. All I want to know is if there's a way to remap the Middle click to any of the F1-F12 buttons.

Yes, where's the MacBook Pro with integrated toaster?
Quite why people keep expecting announcements of upgraded laptops at a photography conference is beyond me.
Why apple hasn't released a C2D macbook pro in time for the "back to school" buying season is beyond me. Every single one of these events is a possibility for an upgrade. Furthermore, those of us that want the latest and greatest for a $2,000+ investment are getting a little tired of being let down over and over again.
Get with the program Apple!! GOSH

I really don't get why people who come up with specs don't think ahead. When SD came out it has a 2GB limit. So they updated it, SDHC for a 32GB limit. Now they had to update it again, SDXC for a 2TB limit. They should have just designed the format to scale in the FIRST place.
For example: CompactFlash came out in like 1994 and has scaled all the way up to like 137GB, when the first cards were under 1MB.
