    Hello Everyone on Macrumors,

    Just wanted to say that I am running a Developer Preview of Mac OS X Lion and it is pretty cool. There are a few bugs here and there but otherwise it works great. Has all the features that they Demoed in the Keynote in October (those are the big ones) they also changed the look of all the buttons (They look cool and more modern because the buttons have been the same since 10.0)

    If anyone wants to ask me anything about it I will be happy to answer any questions

    Posting a Screen Shot of one of my favorite features.

    Macdude2010, in the Text-to-Speech menu under Lion, is there a pre-assigned keyboard shortcut for having the computer speak a preselected text? In SL, one selects the keyboard combination when activating this feature in the Speech Preference Pane under System Preferences. There is no preassigned key in SL.

    Hi again,

    I managed to solve the problem. My UIViewController subclass as configured correctly. The problem was in the configuration of the Navigation Controller. I had to Specify the Class name in IB for the UIViewController embedded in the Navigation Controller. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

    I would install it in the HD. It's not that buggy but I wouldn't keep it as my only OS.

    Hi All,

    How do I keep m Mac clean?? I have downloaded a couple of applications that I do not need, how do I delete them??

    Thanks,

    Will

    Nothing needed to clean the Mac, to uninstall applications, drag them from the Applications folder onto the Trash icon in the Dock.
    To delete preferences and other small data that application may have left behind: Best way to FULLY DELETE a program (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=11171082&postcount=16)

    The simple answer is that if your company is not making enough money to pay a trademark attorney, you don't need a trademark... these are business protections, and without revenue you have little to protect.

    Even if you did pay for a trademark, it does not appear you would be able to protect yourself in court (a potentially far more expensive process)... this means that your trademark would soon be invalid because if you do not actively protect your trademark, you lose it.

    The high cost of some of these processes can be seen as a deterrent to trademark squatting... not that much different than the people who buy up domain names hoping that someday they will be valuable.

    In terms of your specific company (r.e. your PM), because of the strong possibility that many other entities share the same name, I do not think that you would be allowed to take ownership or copyright over it.

    Agree, those who don't understand copyright or trademark should either read

    http://www.copyright.gov/ and http://www.uspto.gov/

    or hire a professional.

    Washington (CNN) -- Frank Buckles, the last living U.S. World War I veteran, has died, a spokesman for his family said Sunday. He was 110.
    Buckles "died peacefully in his home of natural causes" early Sunday morning, the family said in a statement sent to CNN late Sunday by spokesman David DeJonge.
    Buckles marked his 110th birthday on February 1, but his family had earlier told CNN he had slowed considerably since last fall, according his daughter Susannah Buckles Flanagan, who lives at the family home near Charles Town, West Virginia.
    Buckles, who served as a U.S. Army ambulance driver in Europe during what became known as the "Great War," rose to the rank of corporal before the war ended. He came to prominence in recent years, in part because of the work of DeJonge, a Michigan portrait photographer who had undertaken a project to document the last surviving veterans of that war.
    As the years continued, all but Buckles had passed away, leaving him the "last man standing" among U.S. troops who were called "The Doughboys."
    DeJonge found himself the spokesman and advocate for Buckles in his mission to see to it that his comrades were honored with a monument on the National Mall, alongside memorials for veterans of World War II and the conflicts in Korea and Vietnam.
    Buckles made history when he was asked to testify in Congress on the matter before a House committee on December 3, 2009.
    "I have to," he told CNN when he came to Washington, as part of what he considered his responsibility to honor the memory of fellow-veterans.
    Buckles, after World War I ended, took up a career as a ship's officer on merchant vessels. He was captured by the Japanese in the Philippines during World War II and held prisoner of war for more than three years before he was freed by U.S. troops.
    Never saying much about his POW experience, Buckles instead wanted attention drawn to the plight of the D.C. War Memorial. During a visit to the run-down, neglected site a few years ago, he went past the nearby World War II memorial without stopping, even as younger veterans stopped and saluted the old soldier in his wheelchair as he went by.
    Renovations to the structure began last fall, but Buckles, with his health already failing, could not make a trip to Washington to review the improvements. The National Park Service is overseeing efforts that include replacing a neglected walkway and dressing up a deteriorated dome and marble columns.
    Details for services and arrangements will be announced in the days ahead, the family statement said.
    Flanagan, his daughter, said preliminary plans began weeks ago, with the Military District of Washington expressing its support for an honors burial at Arlington, including an escort platoon, a horse-drawn casket arrival, a band and a firing party.
    "It has long been my father's wish to be buried in Arlington, in the same cemetery that holds his beloved General Pershing," Flanagan wrote as she began to prepare for the inevitable in a letter she sent to home-state U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-West Virginia.
    "I feel confident that the right thing will come to pass," she said.
    In addition to graveside ceremonies, a proposal from U.S. Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas, calls for a memorial in the U.S. Capitol, where Buckles' casket would be displayed with honors.
    Buckles in 2008 attended Veterans Day ceremonies at Arlington at the grave of Gen. John Pershing, the commander of U.S. troops during World War I.
    He also had met with then-President George W. Bush at the White House, and U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates at the Pentagon.
    "The First World War is not well understood or remembered in the United States," Gates said at the time. "There is no big memorial on the National Mall. Hollywood has not turned its gaze in this direction for decades. Yet few events have so markedly shaped the world we live in."
    Buckles' family asks that donations be made to the National World War I Legacy Project to honor Frank Buckles and the 4,734,991 Americans that he served with during World War I. Details can be found at: www.frankbuckles.orghttp://www.cnn.com/2011/US/02/27/wwi.veteran.death/index.html

    The solar fireworks at the weekend were recorded by several satellites, including Nasa’s new Solar Dynamics Observatory which watched its shock wave rippling outwards.

    Astronomers from all over the world witnessed the huge flare above a giant sunspot the size of the Earth, which they linked to an even larger eruption across the surface of Sun.

    The explosion, called a coronal mass ejection, was aimed directly towards Earth, which then sent a “solar tsunami” racing 93 million miles across space.

    Images from the SDO hint at a shock wave travelling from the flare into space, the New Scientist reported.
    Experts said the wave of supercharged gas will likely reach the Earth on Tuesday, when it will buffet the natural magnetic shield protecting Earth.

    It is likely to spark spectacular displays of the aurora or northern and southern lights.
    "This eruption is directed right at us," said Leon Golub, of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA).
    "It's the first major Earth-directed eruption in quite some time."

    Scientists have warned that a really big solar eruption could destroy satellites and wreck power and communications grids around the globe if it happened today.

    Nasa recently warned that Britain could face widespread power blackouts and be left without critical communication signals for long periods of time, after the earth is hit by a once-in-a-generation “space storm”.
    The Daily Telegraph disclosed in June that senior space agency scientists believed the Earth will be hit with unprecedented levels of magnetic energy from solar flares after the Sun wakes “from a deep slumber” sometime around 2013.

    It remains unclear, however, how much damage this latest eruption will cause the world’s communication tools.
    Dr Lucie Green, of the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, Surrey, followed the flare-ups using Japan's orbiting Hinode telescope.

    "What wonderful fireworks the Sun has been producing,” the UK solar expert said.
    “This was a very rare event – not one, but two almost simultaneous eruptions from different locations on the sun were launched toward the Earth.

    "These eruptions occur when immense magnetic structures in the solar atmosphere lose their stability and can no longer be held down by the Sun's huge gravitational pull. Just like a coiled spring suddenly being released, they erupt into space.”

    She added: "It looks like the first eruption was so large that it changed the magnetic fields throughout half the Sun's visible atmosphere and provided the right conditions for the second eruption.
    "Both eruptions could be Earth-directed but may be travelling at different speeds.

    “This means we have a very good chance of seeing major and prolonged effects, such as the northern lights at low latitudes."link (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/space/7923069/Nasa-scientists-braced-for-solar-tsunami-to-hit-earth.html)

    Undoubtedly 10, it's the best desktop on Earth today.

    And despite all this BS that Winblows fanboys love to spread around here, I am yet to see a PC beating my 2008 iMac in terms of overall performance, UI responsiveness and REAL multitasking capabilities (not the crap that Windows represents).

    NONE of my friends and relatives (all of them NORMAL users) has a better-performing machine - so please be careful when reading posts from hobbyists about "building your machine" and the like. No ordinary customer does that or wants to do that.

    - The iMac has the BEST screen in the industry;
    - The BEST OS in the industry, with the option to run inferior Windows if you want to suffer;
    - The BEST AIO design, and none of the bulkiness common to the ugly Windows world;
    - The BEST keyboard;
    - The BEST standard, multitouch mouse (magic mouse) - just genius;
    - Even for an older machine like mine, EXCELLENT overall performance;
    - Multitasking responsiveness that is miles ahead of Windows machines (remembering my pathetic PC at work);
    - Almost totally silent;
    - The best customer service in the world.

    Windows PCs nowadays are just for three types of people:

    1 - Hardcore gamers who love to brag about irrelevant specs or one extra FPS;
    2 - People like the above who need to change their GPU every month or like to tinker with their boxes;
    3 - Masochists.

    Just buy your iMac and be happy - you're not gonna regret it.

    Not exactly an even-handed account...

    ... there are reasons to favour PCs. PCs are cheaper - considerably so, away from the all-in-one domain. They have inferior screens, sure, but decent screens can be bought. And there are still some things that Windows can do that, regrettably, OS X can't. And if you buy a Mac with a view to installing Windows, be ready to shell-out for an expensive second OS.

    Also, the Magic Mouse is abject shite, in my opinion. I gave mine away.

    Finally, much as I think you'd enjoy owning an iMac, I'd like to say this - it's just a computer. It won't reduce your likelihood of getting cancer, or take your dog for a walk when it's raining, or get you back with your ex-girlfriend. It's a lovely computer - no doubt about that - but it's just a computer.

    As someone else mentioned, try running Disk Utility Repair Disk off of your install disc (while booted off it). Or, just reformat (which will erase the contents). The correct format would be "Mac OS Extended". That should give you a clean slate, provided there are no hardware issues (with the drive, in particular). Memory problems would show with different symptoms.

    If those are the original discs, it should work. Though, from what I can find on the earliest model (desk lamp style), the minimum it shipped with was 10.1.3. If it was any later model, it should have shipped with 10.2. Original discs should be grey.

    10.4, Tiger, should work just fine on that model. I used to run it on a slower 667MHz PowerBook.

    According to EveryMac.com Apple iMac G4/700 (Flat Panel) Specs (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac_700_fp.html) shipped with 9.2.2 & X 10.1.2. Since we haven't been given any more info than it's a G4 iMac it's kind of hard to make specific recommendations.

    i am finding that Safari 5.1 is almost unusable on Lion. It drops all internet connections and i have to use network preferences to reboot if you will just to get it use my wifi everytime.

    the bookmark bar doesn't work and on and on. im using chrome and its fast as heck on lion. too many bugs to use lion for everyday right now...

    That has nothing to do with Safari, it's the Wi-Fi changes Apple made in Lion (issue that will be fixed eventually).

    What do you mean the bookmark bar doesn't work?

    i have the latest developer build of chrome and the latest build of firefox as well and they both work perfectly for me on lion...

    I'm using Chrome on Lion, just sucks that the new scrollbars and full screen options aren't there yet.

    The only person with the source is I0n1c and he was out of the country last update so it took him some time to compile new binaries for the release (if needed).

    This could also be why it's not patched yet - with no access to the source it's harder for Apple to reverse engineer the exploit and discover what they are doing. With a need to get the update out so fast they probably didn't bother. I expect it to be in the next patch though.....

    Thanks for the info. Wouldn't it be great if this was some sort of super hack that Apple can't figure out how to patch?

    I can dream, right? ;)
