Apple should have extended the full education discount of 14% to students. As much as I love Apple's products, they're very much an overly greedy company these days. They're also possibly being myopic, as students are highly likely to buy content for the device IMO

This works out to what, $470 a piece? Give me a break.

Right now in NYC you can walk in the Apple store anytime and get the Verizon iPad. ATT models are extremely hard to find.
So how is it that Verizon is preferred???... (I know why but I'll let you guess...:))

Don't forget that the Union stripping bill that somehow is going to help with the fake deficit was passed only because it wasn't a revenue related bill.
The deficit itself is not fake per se, Walker's tax giveaways belong to the next budget period (http://politifact.com/wisconsin/statements/2011/feb/18/rachel-maddow/rachel-maddow-says-wisconsin-track-have-budget-sur/) (after June, I think). What is fake is the raging-conflagration-must-hose-everything-NOW aspect of the situation. IOW, deficit: real, crisis: fake.

Of course, this isn't really about open standards. Last I checked, H264 video has no encryption associated with it per se. You have to add your own on top.
That's what everyone is doing, Netflix, Amazon, etc. Netflix licenses theirs already, Apple will do so too.

Why can't Apple do WIFI screensharing using Airplay and AppleTV? They were boasting about how you can connect the iPad to the bigscreen using a cable...how cool would it be if you didn't need the cable (just use AppleTV or Airplay licensed device)? The technology obviously exists...there is already another company who makes such a device. It seems like Apple is very close they just need to make the next step.

I'm not saying they WILL do that on iPod, but they'd be more likely to do it than a touch-screen home button.
I don't think the gestures would be that bad anyway. I've been using 10.7 Lion for a week now and some of those 4-finger gestures work perfect on the trackpad which is almost the size of an iPod anyway.
Trackpad is larger and provides more space for fingers than the touchscreen would when you're utilizing those gestures. Difference between a swipe and a full-hand pinch.

What facebook does with the data... I assume nothing. you assume they share it. I suppose that topic is open for debate

The initial version that came out apparently had a bug and replaced people's photos with facebook profile pics with people who had similar names but weren't even friends in Facebook. Also, what the app is supposed to do and actually does is two different things apparently. I've read reviews around the net about people losing data. It is obvious the software is buggy.

Anyone know whether or not the IMACs are going to be updated in the next few months?
I am starting to look for a new computer (switching from a PC to a MAC) and trying to get a handle on when possible updates might be released if any. I would hate to buy in the next couple months when all I had to do was wait until the end of the year.

My MBA Ultimate is perfect for me right now as my sole working machine. This is simply a super balanced laptop for those seeking mobility and reasonable performance. No need for me to fix what's not broken right now.
I won't be jumping in on a SB+HD3000 upgrade, so I will pass on the next update until Ivy comes out (as long as it's paired with a decent GPU and not with a lame HD3000-like).Why does everybody repeat the mantra 'Ivy Bridge'? Will it make the Intel's HD 3000 perform better in some kind of mysterious magical way? Or do you expect that by the time IB is released Intel will have developed a new, presumably better, IGP? Shall we expect the same comments "Intel IGP sucks I'm gonna skip IB and wait for whatever-bridge" again next year?
I am aware that, of all computers Apple produces, the MBA will suffer the most from advancements of technology because it is not upgradeable. So, if there are some radical improvements that IB will introduce that I might be interested in I will join the camp of people who will wait. The present 11" can't do the job I like it to, I need a faster processor but I like the form of 11" MBA.

Just from my observation (I have no hard data or anything), it seems that at least 25% of new mac buyers are switchers. And from conversations I've heard around my office, I think that number will continue to grow. Apple is really turning heads with this transition to Intel. People like to know what they're getting in a machine (even if they don't really understand the components themselves) and Intel is a household name for the windows world. Good stuff. ;)

It's only been a bit of fun, but the homeless charity Shelter have received a large slice of cash in the process (http://www.justgiving.com/ratm4xmas) and are due to get more from RATM themselves.

If it's in the Chinese hand then it's probably the hardware mfgr's leak.
