Unless your parents have SSN, you can't really claim exemption. The other way you could claim exemption is, if they visitied for business reasons - such as running your motel, shop or business. For that, you'd need the B1 visa. Medical expenses are not really covered for them as far as I know (I used an insurance company for that).
Do post any further updates if you do get them. I did talk to a CPA since they came here to help me with my house and moving and painting and all that headache that comes once you buy a house. He did not file for exemptions as such. You can however claim exemptions if you had gone to India for visa stamping (flight tickets, charges etc are exempted).

Hi
I hold a H1b Visa but did not work after coming to US.
Can anybody guide me regarding my current status.
My H1 was approved in 2007 quota and i entered US in march 2008..but was not successful in getting a job and my employer is not running any payroll..
can anybody help me with this??

Currently I am on h1( completed 1 year) working in construction industry. My profile consist of Bachelors from India and Masters from USA.
The company I work for is not willing to go ahead with my green card. ( With the economy going south, its not wise to jump). But know a company who liked my profile and is willing to sponsor my green card-EB2. The reason they are not willing to hire now is due to economy, but willing to help me in my GC process before hiring and might pick me up at first opportunity.
Something like this: I am employed for Company A on h1 and company B is willing to do my paperwork as a future potential employee?
I had various concerns:

>> GC takes 4-5 yrs to process. What if they decide not to hire me?

Well my experience with passport renewal in Chicago was HORRIBLE. First it took about 6 week to receive it. I ordered a jumbo passport but received a regular one ...called the office and left several messages -NO REPLY. Finally one Mr.Chaman Lal had to answer my call. My luck Chaman was horrible to talk (too rude) and was a perfect Bihari babu ( no offense to any Biharis on forum) said in pure Bihari accent,"No Jumbo passport made here and as far as refund for the extra money for the jumbo passport I don't refund any paisa to anybody" and the bang he hung up.

So cut the wailing (or take it to that other therapy forum) and instead of asking what IV is doing for you, ask what you can do to help yourself and all of us in this mess! Channel your rage and despair.
You've contributed. Fabulous. Reach out and recruit other members. Have them contribute. Join one of our volunteer teams get involved in some activity -- alliance building, media, web design, ad design, membership drive.
Read our basic documents and educate yourselves. I'm continually shocked by the number of people caught in this jam who can't be bothered to read about the mess they are in. If you are wondering which documents -- go to the Resources for lawmaker meetings page -- that has a list of 5 with links.

I am planning to file my 7th year extension and would appreciate some one who can provide some guidance. I have a pending I-485 (July 2007 filer).
My six year visa expires in Sep 07, 2009
a) How much in advance we can submit HIB petition. I read some where H1B can be applied six month in advance.
b) If we apply six month in advance, can those dates be from Sep 08, 2009 or the date of submission.
c) Can we include the dates for some one is physically not present in US
d) What supporting documents are needed to prove that some one was not present in US?

H1-B extension = yes you can, either your second 3 year extension (total of 6) or the yearly extension after the 6th year until you get your GC.
IMHO, better to go both H1 extension AND EAD but not necessary UNLESS you want to change employer. if you want to change employer then EAD is a MUST because your H1 is based from your current employer. on the other hand, if you are staying on your current employer and no plans on getting out then H1B-Extension is good enough.
The reason why it is safer to have both H1-Extension and EAD is that, just in case for some reason your current employer fires you or something goes wrong with the company, you have a safe haven on an EAD because you can work (same occupation of your H1) legally and need not worry of your status.

EB3 with PD of July 2006. I-140 Approved. 485 +EAD+AP filed 2 weeks ago.
I was contemplating on job change before dates became current in June and decision to accept 485....
Now that 485 is filed and this DUST has settled, wondering whether all this is worth the wait. (even 180 days).
Currently in my 5th year of H1b, by waiting out the 6 months, I'll also get 3 yr h1b ext. (and hopefully ead by then).
So is waiting 180 days the best choice? or screw all this and change! (I dunno if this AC21 etc etc is practical...same job description etc)

Your mention of 30 miles maximum, I believe, refers to distance to your work place. It is a lot of distance to commute at rush time. Nevertheless, Ferederick County is your best bet, where a small SFH or a good size TH can be found for your price.
BTW, why do you need "Lots of Indians". Don't you want to be part of the main stream if you have decided to live here?

There is no need for you to have an actual copy of the I-140. I am assuming that you want to have the documents to prevent the current employer doing any 'harm' - intentional or otherwise to your case.
AC21 states that as long as the 140 has been certified, the current employer cannot do any thing if the employee leaves.
I am NOT sure about this next point, but even if the 140 is revoked by the employer the LC and PD stay valid.
Make sure you have the receipt #s, and check the status on the USCIS website. Once 140 is certified, you are golden.
Hope this helps.

The key will be to see what kind of congress we will have, before that, it is pretty hard to make any prediction. In any case, i remember this may when President George Bush and the senators met at the white house, he (the prez) told that he believe to have a bill by the end of the year, he never mention before election.

I reviewed the State of Washington's unemployment compensation website, and from what I can see you would be eligible for benefits as long as you were legally authorized to work for the last 24 months and continue to be authorized to accept new employment. You will be required to provide your A# and agree to allow the State of Washington to share your application information with other agencies such as the IRS (UC benefits are taxable).

2. Temporary resignation and rejoining - is it really feasible?
I don't think you need to resign something in particular.
You can work with SAP company and when your date is becoming current move to QA Company and you should be good. Its like filing AC-21 to SAP company and again filing AC-21 to QA Company.
I know lot of people do this who are working on EAD. Generally you know your date will be current in next year. So you can work for SAP untill June/july-2011 and then move back to QA Company before date becomes current.
3. Stay with current company - try for contract positions even if it means that I have to stay long on bench. I have been already out since Aug.
Your choice and lets wait for some Guru's answers.
