Isn't Verizon's 4G network going to be GSM?

    Nope.

Verizon is overlaying their CDMA network with LTE, which is a totally new protocol that has to be backfitted to work with any older system.

Many GSM carriers had already chosen LTE as their 4G protocol. This is what confused casual observers. However, CDMA carriers are implementing it first and therefore defining many of the details.

Verizon will continue to use CDMA for voice, and for data for lesser powered devices, for many years to come.

LTE will mostly be used at first by Verizon as sort of a wireless FiOS. It's far more likely that we'll first see an LTE Apple tablet, than an LTE Apple phone. I'd love to see Apple come out with something that allows video calls. LTE would be perfect for that.

on another note if it is wouldn't their coverage also be spotty?

Verizon says they're moving up LTE deployment and want to hit all the major markets (100 million) almost all at once in 2010. So yes, it would be mostly cities until they finish up in late 2013.

But again, LTE probably wouldn't be wasted on voice or handhelds, not for a long while. Both CDMA and GSM carriers want to get their money's worth out of their original networks.

Meanwhile Vista will be behind Leopard in 64-bit support :) An optional install no less!
This claim, of course, is based on two Powerpoints from a Stevenote at WWDC.

The current 10.5 builds are behind XP 64-bit in support.

And those Apple 64-bit Intel systems - not a lick of 64-bit support in the OSX that runs on them....

    Dude, you're clueless.

I have a severe congenital hearing loss and it's really amazing how parents don't really understand the long term consequences of poor hearing protection.

Just as in almost all other health matters, the more exposure to loud noises when young, the more likely a child is to end up with a hearing loss as he ages. Some parents do insist on hearing protection when using firearms, but I'm sure there are a lot that don't. Shooting guns without hearing protection is like taking a five year old to a Nascar race. Very, very irresponsible simply based on the noise level.

I'm sure Dr Choi was speaking of the danger of firearms being discharged by and around children with a lack of supervision, but your tunnel vision when it comes to the health and safety of children is appalling.

I think it's you who's clueless. You make it seem as if it's the role of government and physicians to eliminate risk in our lives. What's more risky, taking your kid to a NASCAR event without hearing protection, or raising them in a large city with lots of traffic and crime? What's more risky, raising your kids in a home with un-locked guns, or raising them with an ultra-protective disregard for a child's need to learn life lessons and experience the value of trust/responsibility first hand?

My dad had a rifle hanging on a gun-rack above his computer in his office for my entire life. The ammunition was directly below the gun in a drawer as part of the gun-rack. I was raised to respect the weapon and to never touch it unless I was given permission. I earned my parents' trust, and learned responsibility as a consequence. Was that wrong of my parents? Absolutely not, but I guess I'm just 'clueless.'

Where do you live? Cedar Rapids, where the nearest next physician is five or ten minutes away, at most? What if you were in Guttenberg, where the next physician is half an hour or more? Open-ended liberty to refuse to provide treatment at a whim is just plain irresponsible.

An unpopular physician creates the market demand for an alternative. Supply, unencumbered by any sort of rationing by the gov't subsidized higher-education system, would produce the complimentary supply.

In any event, do you seriously contend that this is a situation solveable by by big intrusive government controlling physicians and eliminating their ability to render services as they see fit?

I still think the "thanks" system like at RedFlagDeals.com is a better representation of what a good "point" system looks like. Certain people are very helpful in answering other people's questions or providing useful information. When someone answers your question or provides a technical explanation (or even a snappy comeback or an informed opinion) that people find insightful, they can "thank" the user for the post. Everyone who sees the post then can quickly see that this post has been helpful to others ("6 people thanked Mad Mac Maniac for this post"). And the cumulative total stays with the user, so you can also see at a quick glance that this user has a reputation for being helpful ("Mad Mac Maniac has been thanked 4,134 times.")

I prefer this idea too. I would rate your post positively if it hadn't been disabled :p

Seing your "adventures", no way I would ever try to do anything on a custom rig...

well i wouldn't say that. it wouldn't be as big of a deal if i was at the machine everyday, then a quick change of a few settings and it's back up. but being away, this is not fun.

Honestly, there isn't enough time, we are rushing through WWII to know it before the CST. I also don't remember people pushing creationism in California

What's CST? I honestly have no idea. Actually, the entire sentence is confusing, could you clarify?

So I'm told, but A) 3G phones are backwards compatible with old GSM networks. Mine switches between 3G/regular GSM constantly when I'm at home, as I live very close to a base station but far from the nearest 3G mast. Hence they should just stick a 3G 'sleeper cell' in there for (near) future use... and B) I respect that Apple is an American company, but they peddle their stuff all across the globe. Every little itty bitty iPod has 21 languages built in. When Apple Store closes down for maintenance it happens simultaneously all across the globe, and when it pops back online again the new products are available in all countries. Never in Apple's history have I seen them do something as US-centric as this - heck, we're not getting it until 2008! Strange, pretty damn alienating, and it had better not become a habit.
Apple's iPhone launch is no different from any other phone launch -- it appears to be going world region by world region. Europeans get all of the awesome new Nokia and Sony Erricson phones months/years before the US (assuming they make it here at all), so you're wasting your breath by complaining that the iPhone is coming to the US first to this American. I didn't find it fun getting (or paying for) the latest Windows Mobile device from eBay UK or Expansys because neither of the two GSM carriers here wanted it.

Since the quad-band EDGE iPhone Apple announced Tuesday would work quite well 'as is' on your overseas GSM network, I'd imagine that the delay to 2008 would be so that they COULD put in 3G for you. Properly. Not some crazy idea about a super secret 3G chip to be enabled later. Especially since your 3G runs on entirely different frequencies than the US.

or did i miss the step where you could record tv shows and put movies on it from your dvds ?
Not to threadjack this into an Apple TV thread, but the Apple TV appears to stream/store anything that can be played from in iTunes, and there have been ways to get your own TV shows and DVDs into iTunes for awhile now.

*Yes, the signal issue is real. No, it has not caused any fuss while maintaining calls.

Since a number of people have complained that calls have been dropped and download speeds have drastically reduced, your comment that it has not caused any fuss would appear to be inaccurate.

Unless you mean it has not caused you any fuss? You might want to edit your sig to improve the accurary that up if this is the case...

Here's a little knowledge. Try to empower yourself with it.

    I've shot guns.

And yet ... somehow ... I'm not bewitched by the thrill of firearms.

I know. How is that even possible?

Me too. I've shot guns and was once shot at, and live with someone who's shot guns and is disfigured by being shot pointblank. Both of us are for gun control.

What particular features is Mac OS X missing that Windows 7 has?

Also switch off mobile, unplug landline, wear iPod, raise volume, close curtains, disconnect TV, put head under pillow, sing loudly ... and retreat to a remote Hebridean island until the keynote is posted.

Alternatively, if you're feeling more extreme...

"And one more thing...all 5G ipods have a built in wireless chip which we activated about 5 seconds ago, so here's a recap for all those of you listening in..."

Or, perhaps, because of? Makes them tougher.

    Discuss. :)
Likewise with the Jews perhaps?
It's already been explained to you that left-handedness is mentioned in history classes. Why do you have a problem with gay people being discussed? WHY?

Answer the question, although I think I already know your answer.
My point is lefties don't get history coverage in California so why should homosexuals? Furthermore American history classes end in the 1950s. I wouldn't have a problem with homosexuals being discussed when pertinent if we actually had the time, as it stands we don't.
    So you're cool with left-handers but not left-footers (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=left%20footer)?

depends on the meaning of left-footer
They already misrepresent Islamic history in US schools. Saudi funded history books make it seem that Islam spread peacefully through the maghreb, arabian peninsula and levant/asia minor, but actually it was spread on the point of the Mohammedon's blade.

Why not teach gay history too? At least gays don't perform violent acts and then use their scriptures to justify it lol
Don't forget al-Andalus being the epitome of civilization and tolerance in Europe
Doesn't your first statement contradict the second?

Wouldn't learning disorders, dyslexia, stuttering and other speech disorders make it more difficult to "do well in society"?
mea culpa, I badly worded that, I meant when they aren't forced to use their right hand, for example of the last seven presidents five have been lefties
