It's true that a high megapixel count is not anything like the most important factor about a camera, but everything else being equal more megapixels is better than fewer megapixels. I seriously doubt Apple is going to add megapixels just for the number on the specs list.

I think the point is that the technical specs of a photo, and the camera it was taken on, can't make a badly lit, poorly composed photo a good one, and (within reason) can't totally destroy the work of a good photographer who knows what they are doing but only had access to a 'lesser' camera.

Another way of looking at it might be that Leonardo da Vinci could do more impressive work with a pencil and paper than many people could do with a studio full of photoshop artists.

    Fair enough.

I think that was common sense and wasn't worth mentioning in any context.

    MY GOD

I just woke up from a nap and have at least a DOZEN e-mails from PC-owning friends and famailies saying stuff like "What's up with your boys?!?!?!"

I kindly link them to the 4.1 million Dell's being recalled. :D
My girlfriend is having a field-day. Being a Dell fan-girl, I was like nyahhhh your laptop's gonna explode.

Now she's getting her own back (http://www.thehobsite.com/blog/?p=258) :(

I was wondering how many hillbillies and other country folk have an iPod. maybe Walmart is afraid that even Billy bob wants to download instead of buying from crappy WM.

You'd be surprised how many people are willing to live in a trailer in order to be able to afford $300 cell phones and "designer" clothes. There's an apartment building not too far from my house which is an utter dump, and in one of the parking slots is a vintage Corvette.

Apple needs to take a page from Snapper's book regarding Wal-Mart -- give them the big fat finger. For those of you who aren't aware, Wal-Mart approached Snapper a few years ago, wanting them to make a cheap quality build of mower, put the Snapper name on it, be paid WM's crap supplier prices, and sell them exclusively in Wal-Mart stores. Long story short, Snapper didn't want poor quality (or WM for that matter) to be associated with the Snapper brand, and told WM what it could go do with itself.

If you think about it, it's not all too surprising that some of these "professionals" are getting so worked up and sulky over this release. The notion that "pro editing" can belong to just about anyone, rather than an exclusive circle of elites, poses an existential crisis. Apple's re-thinking of editing is also a re-thinking of what it means to be "professional". The announcement sheds light on a future in which their "advanced", learned techniques are no longer advantageous. The "industry pros" are facing the plight of impending impotence. It's not something anyone would really openly admit, but I think they're feeling a bit naked, stripped of their status.

Who can blame them for being pissy?
I couldn't agree with you more, oh the poor professionals :(

    U Mad?

I'm not the one that is mad... I am just tired of seeing people on here hoping for a mediocre upgrade... such as no design change and little speed bump...not referring to this thread in particular, but i see it in others..

people have literally admitting to it. I just think we shouldn't be hoping for small advancements in tech

I doubt it. The $129 upgrades were back in the era before the iOS platform took off. The iPhone, and iPad are really accelerating Apple's income and profits, so they don't need to price OS upgrades that high. Snow Leopard brought a bunch of new tech to the table for developers to play with, and $29 was the easy way to ensure most people had that tech. Apple is likely much more interested in moving the platform forward then they are with $100 extra from each person. The more people stay current, the more developers can actually use the latest toys. Also consider that for Intel 10.4 users, the "$29 upgrade" worked fine, even though Apple could have blocked that and forced it to be a Leopard only upgrade.

Notice how Apple moved away from paid iOS upgrades for iPod Touch users. They saw enough people hold back that it was going to be an issue with the apps in the App Store. Now iPod users get their updates for free.

I'm going to predict $29 for Lion, with an option to even just grab it from the App Store like how they distributed it to developers. Possibly even a little cheaper off the App Store, and $29 for the in store disc based copy.I guess we'll see.

I'm not sure how you can call the iPhone 4 a "POS". I've had all the iPhones and it is MUCH better in about 10 different ways. Don't listen to all the stupid BS about the antenna... I've NEVER had the issue unless I sat they and tried to do it exactly as told. Even then, minimal. iPhone 4 has many more features, and even just the design, makes the previous ones look like toys.

If I were involved in the design and heard comments like that, I'd be offended. Or actually, probably just ignore it, since the person saying that doesn't know what they're saying... sorry to be mean, but I just don't get it.

I could cause the antenna to lose all its bars by placing my one finger on the antenna... Thats ridiculous. And anyone who has one, on the At&T network and says "I've never dropped a call" is a fanboi in the worst way and flat out lying. All my iPhones, - and even non-iPhones - on AT&T's network drop calls period, all the time. Even if the antenna design was perfect on the iPhone 4, it would drop calls because of At&T's network, so yea... I don't believe that in a second.

Not to mention all the problems people were having with the screen, and the proximity sensors... and thats all I can think of off the top of my head. I'm sure there is/was more. Also, I refused to buy another iPhone that didn't have more than 32 GB of space, since I'm currently maxing out the capacity on my current 32 GB iPhone. Thus, I decided not to upgrade to avoid dealing with all that. Really, the 4 was just problems and a few spec increases. The increased resolution of the display means nothing to me without a larger screen, and the 3GS was fast enough at the time. The one and only thing that I would have enjoyed is the bump in RAM.

Also, design-wise, I'd take the original iPhone over any of the others. It's too bad the AL causes havoc with radio signals. I would think someone who supposedly had all the iPhones would agree. And at least not think it looked like a "toy".

Good thing your not a designer, since when you designed crap and people called you out on it you'd be offended. You'd probably not be able to emotionally handle it.

And I 100% know what I'm talking about. Because I have an Anti-Apple opinion doesn't mean I'm ill-informed and I don't know what I'm talking about. I've worked on and dealt with enough electronics to have an informed opinion.

Agreed, most will go the cheaper route with the bigger numbers, and it should stay that way. I'm all for Apple quadrupling their market share up to about 20%, but once we get past that share we start getting 'undocumented Windows features' on our Macs. Virii, security exploits, crappy software, spyware, etc.

I don't expect 20% of the cars I see to be luxury cars, the same is true of computers.

It's the same reason people will pick up a Gamecube over an Xbox - They don't take time to find out what comes with either, they just pick the cheapest. Nemo: "Well it does the same thing, dunnit?"

If I'm not mistaken, most of the 'people' you're referring to bought a PS2.

You simply can't configure your hardware in a mac as much as you can in a PC. I know people who are hardcore PC "tinkerers", who barely touch their mac (with regards to messing with the hardware), because there's simply nothing interesting to do with it, except maybe upgrade it.

True, if you want a neon coumputer with hydraulics that'll do the '3 wheel motion' get a PC. If you want a computer which looks great as manufactured, get a Mac.

To put it into my beloved auto analogies, you can lower and tune a Honda Accord, put neon lights, big woofers, nitrous, and glitter paint on it. You could spend six figures doing this.

If you have half a brain, you spend 80k and buy a 1997 Porsche Turbo.

Can you buy a 5 fan aluminium case for a mac? No.

With a cool running chip, why run 5 fans?

Can you buy cooling systems, fan regulators and lights? No.

Well, you can, but, why would you?

Can you buy wrapped IDE cables and cut a hole in the side of your mac to show off everything inside? No.

Oh yeah, I forgot, only those proprietary Apple brand flat IDE cables work in a Mac.

And I've got a Dremel and a Sawzall, I can cut a hole in anything I want to. However, I find my computer aesthetically pleasing, and don't enjoy looking at cables, cards, and drives as they sit static all day long

Do you have different types of hardware manufacturers, competing for your money? Well yes, but not as much as PC users.

More and more we're gonna ruin this argument. UNIX has as many driver options for hardware as Windows. Already, some PC cards are working out of the box, and drivers for many more are being rewritten for Jaguar (PPC+BSD). This argument is valid now, but not for long.

The very market Apple has always played for and still plays for today, to some extent, is people who are computer illiterate. Nearly all of their advertising campaigns say: "Macs are easier to use that PCs." Thereby trying to attract those who can't use PCs, or at least, find them difficult to use.

What they're playing for is those who want to use a computer to do work, not those who want to do work on a computer. I've got 2 Macs, 2 PCs, and a Sun box at my desk. I am able to do more in a day on the Macs, because they don't get in my way, they don't have DLL conflicts, they don't BSOD, they just work.

Talk to the smartest engineers in the world about anything, and they'll all tell you to employ the KISS principle at all times for a better product. That's 'Keep it simple, stupid'.

Apple has always made things simple, yet powerful, well still keeping them idiot proof. That is why they have such amazing loyalty.

Mac users are the most disillusioned people that i've ever seen. You guys lie and lie and lie to yourselves time and again, just to make yourselves feel better about buying a Mac.

There's a lot of truth to this. People who think that the G4 1GHz is faster than 2+GHz x86's are indeed delusional. I will, however, be glad to point out that Windows is not a productive place to work, and all the extra mousing, clicking, rebooting, debugging, and BSODing adds up to a lot of wasted time you don't have with a Mac. Additionally, the TCO and downtime/year of the Mac is far superior in a business environment (businesses are the places where computers don't have neon lights, and the people want to work, FYI).

In general, if you want a computer for gaming, you DO NOT buy a Mac, unless you're very stupid. I'd say about one tenth of the games that come out on PC, also get released on Macs, and even when they do, it's a few months to a year after the PC version is released. Granted, Apple is doing an amazing job of getting more games developers to release OSX version of their games, but still, most of the time Mac users have to wait for the game to be release after the PC version. Although, basically all of the best games do eventually get released on Macs. The words "Mac Gamer" is an oxymoron and the words "Hardcore Mac Gamer" is just a myth.

Sure, we're not a gaming platform first and foremost. You should see the three bad games I have on my Solaris machine... Anyway, we get out games a bit later, and I'm okay with that, but as things progress, I think you'll see the quality games released concurrently (like Warcraft III).

A Mac is a great computer, so stop bull****ting yourselves about all of the things you think it can do and just accept that Macs are still more stylish and more stable than PCs and have, in my opinion and i'm sure yours, a much better looking and interesting to use OS. PCs are slowly catching up to Macs in that department, especially with regards to stability and if you really want a stylish computer, it's easy to find as long as you have someone that can build it. I'd personally, rather have a well build, aluminium case (NOT Lian Li cr@p) cased computer than a white, plastic Mac that anyone can buy.

To each they're own. I'm not 13, so I don't wan't an erector set case with lights and a window, and 5 noisy fans.

PCs maybe catching up on stability (I stop at Win2k Pro), but they are losing on Privacy, Fair Use, extensibility, programmability, style, ease of use. and productivity.

Also, anyone here can fix a Mac with relative ease (if something goes wrong), but 90% of PC users flail miserably until calling in professional support. That says a lot.

It's been proven that more intelligent and richer people buy Macs. And that is the most moronic thing i've ever heard. OF COURSE the people who buy macs are, in general, going to have more money and be more intelligent, for the simple fact that Macs are far more expensive than PCs. That's like saying:

"People that buy Mercedes cars are more intelligent and richer than people who buy Skodas."

Macs are more expensive, therefore you need more money to buy them, - the people who buy them have more money because they have better jobs and they have those better jobs because they have college degrees or a better education. GET IT?

Considering that statement says Mac users are more intelligent than PC users, Mac users sure do buy into a lot of stupid, ************, sensationalized advertising.

Well, aside from making an argument, and immediately contradicting it, did you have a point?

The cult of Macintosh is built around taste. An appreciation for design, ease of use, quality, value, etc.

That doesn't mean stupid people don't have Macs, and smart people don't have PCs.

It simply means PC users, on the average, are likely to own Lay-Z-Boys, and Mac owners, on the average are likely to own Eames chairs.

Taste, some have it, some don't.

I believe that Apple WAS turning heads, but with the advent of the 3GHz Intel CPU, i hope Apple will finally start to realize that they need to do something, and fast, but i don't think they will.

Ever seen a PC on the cover of Time magazine? Ever seen a bunch of Mac journalists go 'wow, this Windows on Intel thing is really cool'? Ever think that maybe you're not privy to Apple's master plan?

I've been using Macs since 1984, and I've heard 'Apple better....' more times than I care to imagine. Like before they revolutionized the publishing industry. Like before the orignal iMac was introduced. Like before they brought UNIX to the masses. I'm really not too worried that 'Apple had better...'

Now don't get me wrong, i love Macs. What i HATE is Mac users who continue to lie about what Macs can do, what people who use Macs are like and spout crap like: "Mac users are sooo much better than PC users!". Just grow up!

What can't a Mac do? Play DiVX movies well.
What can a Mac do? Run 99% of all software ever written (MacOS, UNIX, Windows via VPC, C64, SNES, etc through emulation).

Mac users are uppity about being Mac users because they have less problems, it doesn't make them better.

And the sadness of it all is that, in my experience, PC users don't really give a crap about Mac users, but Mac users continue to insult PC users at every chance they get. It's childish.

Actually, Mac users tend to bash PC users who show up in Mac forums touting the great benefits of Wintel.

Mac users (over 18) usually don't have the energy to go muckraking in the PC world.

It's Apples fault. If they can't run their company properly, they can't expect anyone else to do it for them.

Can't run their company? This is too puerile to be real. They're doing huge things in a crap market, creating new revenue streams, new products, etc.

Name a profitable PC company recently?

Give you a hint, starts with A

Maybe by 'can't run thier company' you meant 'can't please me'?

Now when are the fricking new Macs going to be released?

When the planets chip/market/inventory/r&d/manufacturing/cost align in 2003.

I thought I had heard it all!

Are you seriously comparing Bach to the Beatles?

There are hundreds of doctoral dissertations about Bach and his music. There are people studying his typography....etc. For example, there is a study about the color of the ink he used at the beginning of his Leipzig period. They found a relationship of patterns of writing and the color of the ink according to his age. That's is one of the thousands ways they have tried to find out the date of a single piece. There a lot people who devote their lives to perform or/and study his music.

Have they done that for the Beatles?
I am going to take you as my example form now on. I am going to tell my friends there is someone who compares Bach to the Beatles.

You don't know how people will look at The Beatles in the next 100, 200, 300 years. In fact, from what I remember from a music class that I was in, Handel was looked upon as the superior composer during the Baroque period. It wasn't until sometime after his death, that Bach was reexamined. I would argue that the Beatles have had, relatively speaking, as much of an impact as Bach. The Beatles still influence today's music.

I don't understand how people can dismiss The Beatles so easily. Were they the most talented musicians? No. But as a group, they constructed a body of work that is, in my opinion, unparalleled.

So, there- I'm another person that just compared The Beatles to Bach;)

And The Beatles weren't pop. They were what was formally known as Rock and Roll:D

Amazing, how many half-wits are out there!

There is a larger issue in Hewitt's statement, which seems to totally go over some people's heads.

And to the "Facebook sucks" crowd: may be so, but there are a lot more Facebook users, than iPhone users. So it's still important.

And really, over the last few years, my otherwise beloved Apple has turned into the George W. Bush of PC companies. Look at their newly found moral stance, regarding applications. Or their strong-arm tactics. Or the picking of wars not likely to be in their own interest - like the ones with Google, and Adobe.

Or, the fact, that the truly religious (and uninformed), blindly follow, no matter where.

very well put. it's the human condition commercialised. if only apple could step back and see itself for what it has become aside from very rich.

    we don't know that yet.

The ATI X1600 in the "old" iMac is a mobile chip. And an UNDERCLOCKED one.

Damn it, I wanted a Conroe iMac... I wonder how different they are from the Merom performance wise?

BTW, Vesa mount is back with the 24" model.

It's pretty clear why the added the Firewire 800 port ot the iMac: Time Machine requires an external hard drive. And it would be best if it was a pretty darn fast one, as well.

Let me give you a lesson on how CPUs are made.

Intel makes some dies. Then they go through a process called "binning". In this process the dies to test for maximum performance at a certain voltage.

Mobile C2D chips are Conroes that are binned to do the same speed at a lower voltage. So the performance is not going to be immensely different.

Depending on how you look at it, the Mobile chips are actually the cream of the crop.

what better way to find out about the C2D macbooks, than to find out instore! and actually inform the staff that they've been updated!! they didn't know apparently! well.. so they said, but yeah! was a nice suprise!

lol, yea the store employees are usually only informed when we are. managers and inventory people may kno earlier, but they're unlikely to say much.
